My neighbor and I are putting up a 60x48x16 shop, very well insulated, and we're wondering how many BTU's to heat it? Propane guy in town says 180,000 BTU will be what it takes, he also wants to sell the radiant heating system for it, installed around $3800. Does that sound about right?

Sorry I can't answer the BTU question, but please let us know if you can do radiant heat for that price installed... I just always thought it was more expensive than that... is that with a lp/ng boiler or an electric water heater setup? gene_champ

get local rec to do a free heat loss on it. need to know r values, doors, windows and air infiltration to size a heating system. otherwise you have no idea what it needs.

Sibley county Minesota

I put in a 180,000 BTU radiant heat in my shed and mine is 64 x 96 x 18 dealer thought it would be a little week for my size but my walls and ceiling are foam insulated very well. This has not been a good test though not very cold for Minnesota but I never really here the heater run my shed stays a consistent 50 and I have a office that is inside that is 12 x 27 that I heat with a furnace and I have only used 100 gallons of LP this year. deereman

I've got a 48x56 morton. We use a forced air heater hung in the corner. It's a Hot Dog brand, I believe it's 100,000 BTU and we're very happy with it. Cost 750 new. ekeller2

That price of $3800 installed is way too low. toolman

Are we talking radiant tube heat in the ceiling or radiant floor heat?

I have a 150,000 btu tube heater in a 42x60x18 and it is plenty of btu's and cost a lot less than $3800 installed

There would be no boiler or water heater involved in an overhead radiant heater setup. flyndeere

Heat my shop with a 60000btu Lennox Pulse 95% efficiency. shop is 60x40 16 foot ceiling, keep it 38 when nobody is there, 55 when we are working in the shop. Heat my house with a LP modulating boiler 96% efficiency keep it 75 during the day, 65 at night. Last year used 1500 gal ofLP to heat house (2200 sq ft) and shop 2400 sq ft. rocknkcattleinc

Yep, radiant tube heater across the ceiling. No floor heat. Blown insulation in the walls 8 inches thick, blown in ceiling 14 inches thick, one window to the south and one to the east. Only thing is it has sliding 16 foot east door that is around r19 value covered with 3/8 plywood that fits good and tight. If $3800 is too high, what did yours cost if I might ask? what will it cost to heat a shop that size on the normal? We're in NW Iowa.

We also thought about an oil burner but thought they are a lot of maintenance also, hopefully that is just a thought. Simplicity of having propane filled every so often seems best?

Go with the tube heater you will like it.
I paid $2300 for mine installed and gas line ran in Nov 2009
Not sure on cost to heat as shop and house share a LP tank but I think I can easily heat it on 500 gal of LP

Is the installer talking one 180,000 btu or 2 90,000 btu's heaters.   I just put 2  100000-70000 2 stage heaters in a 48 X 70.   They were $3000.00 delivered sales tax included.   I hung them my self and had propane people run lines to them.   So if your talking 2 heaters installed 3800 don't seem bad but if only one seems high.  Oh, and the 200000 BTU'S I have seem plenty but hasn't been real cold yet.

Kevin, we're putting tube heat in our shops as well, They are Re Verber Ray brand heaters, and IIRR, they are 150K, 60' for aorund $2400. We're going to hang them and then the gas co will run the gas. We're getting ours though Johnson Propane in Battle Creek. Re Verber Ray vs very popular in our area, (Odebolt)

I was quoted last month two 30' 75K radiant tube heaters for around $2200 delivered. This was NOT installed, but they are easy to do yourself. I can get you the number of my dealer, e-mail in profile. Flash515

A 175000, 150000 two stage would easily do your shop I sell them for around $1750 not installed. If that gives you an Idea. boog

50'x52'x15' shop here. We installed a 40' x 100,000 btu radiant tube heater back in 2001. Heater cost $1,100 and we installed it our selves. Gas company ran the line, did the connection & fired it for $100 IIRC. Plenty of heat, can heat to 70+º if we want but anything over 60º is to warm to work in. Matt neoh

in my opinion 180,000 btu would be fine. radiant heat is ok if you dont mind losing the overhead space. consider putting in a L.B. White forced air and save some serious money. virtually 100 percent efficient and you could have a 250,000 btu for under $1000. BOGTROTTER

Grainger catalogue has or use to have a BTU calculator in the book, needed to know the r-value of insulation, size of door and window openings. The type of window(dual pane etc.), size of building, height of ceiling.

Would calculate what the heat loss is which is what the replacement value is or the amount of heat that needs to be added to maintain a temperature.

My last choice would be LB white specially in tight building put the inferred on one side and angle it works great.
